
No. 3 Mustangs Win 3-0 At Virginia Tech

BLACKSBURG, Va. (SMU) — No. 3 SMU Men's Soccer took down Virginia Tech 3-0 in Blacksburg, Va., on Sunday.
The Mustangs capitalized on a fast start and goals from Landon Hickam, Milton Lopez and Stephan Soghomonian to take three points home to Dallas. Soghomonian led SMU's offense, contributing to two goals out of the three with a goal and an assist.
Ryan Clanton-Pimentel and Enzo Panozzo also recorded assists, while Mukisa Emmanuel played a major part in SMU's third goal by winning the penalty kick that led to Soghomonian's goal.
On the other side of the field, SMU's defense recorded its sixth clean sheet of the season. They held the Hokies to only eight shots, while the Mustangs recorded 13.
SMU is now 8-0-1 overall this season, 3-0-0 in ACC play. Kevin Hudson's squad extended its winning streak to four consecutive games.
SMU took the initiative in the first few minutes after the whistle and converted the first clear chance of the game as Landon Hickam rattled the net in the seventh minute.

Stephan Soghomonian rolled a sly through ball which found Hickam in behind the defense. The midfielder smashed the ball past the goalkeeper's gloves to give SMU the lead.

The Mustangs found a second goal in the 22nd minute through a play that was started by Enzo Panozzo and finished by Milton Lopez.

Panozzo broke the Virginia Tech line of defense with a pass over the top to find Ryan Clanton-Pimentel, who used his speed to receive the ball and poke a cross that was finished by Lopez.

The game balanced out for the final 23 minutes of the first half, but the scoreline remained 2-0 after 45 minutes.

Virginia Tech had most of the ball at the start of the second period, but SMU grew back into the game in the 70th minute.

SMU saw two big chances inside the box from Soghomonian, but both of his efforts were saved by Virginia Tech's goalkeeper. The junior striker eventually found the net in the 83rd minute from the penalty spot.

Mukisa Emmanuel was fouled inside the penalty box, and Soghomonian stepped up inside the box and slotted the ball into the bottom left corner.

SMU went up 3-0 and held the lead until the final whistle.
