Mustangs Battle (rv) Texas Tech to the End in 1-1 Draw

DALLAS (SMU) – The SMU women's soccer team battled the full 90 minutes against (rv) Texas Tech as Julianne Richter's game-tying goal in the 74th minute led SMU to a 1-1 draw in Washburne Stadium on Thursday.

The Mustangs (4-1-2, 0-0-0 ACC) set the tone of the match early on, fast and physical, which allowed SMU to outshoot Texas Tech (2-0-3, 0-0-0 Big 12) 17-12.

Texas Tech scored late in the first half, but it did not deter the Mustangs as Richter scored the game-tying goal on a feed from Libby Jannereth to swing the momentum back to the Mustangs. SMU held Texas Tech to only two shots in the second half to remain unbeaten at home this season.  

Brooke Bunton and Kaylee Noble led SMU in shots with four apiece as all three of Richter's shots were on goal, which was also a team high.

The goal in the 74th minute was Richter's first of her young career. The freshman leads SMU in assists with four this season.

Aubrey Brown finished the night with three saves and stepped in at key moments to keep SMU in the game and give the Mustangs a chance. The SMU backline led by DeMott and Martin did their job blocking multiple shots in the contest.

Both keepers played exceptionally well as the Mustangs had great looks that TTU's Addie Todd denied, including a one-on-one opportunity from Noble that was saved.

The first half was tightly contested, with both teams generating quality looks left and right as shots favored SMU 11-10. Tech scored in the 38th minute of the game, but the Mustangs never looked defeated at any point in the match.  

SMU came out with the same intensity in the second half and drew nine fouls on the Red Raiders. That never-quit mentality led to Richter scoring the game-tying goal. Both teams had chances down the stretch, but neither could score the game-winning goal, ending the match in a draw.

The Mustangs remained unbeaten at home this season and are now 4-0-2 in Washburne. With the 1-1 draw, the Mustangs have now outscored their opponents 14-2 at home.  

OTHER NOTES
  • SMU is now 5-1-2 all-time versus Texas Tech and 3-0-2 at home against the Red Raiders
  • The Mustangs are now 26-11-6 at home under Nelson
  • Julianne Richter is now tied for the team lead in points with 6 this season (Bunton, Noble)
  • It was Libby Jannereth's second assist of the season.
