SMU freshman wide receiver Chris Cunningham was named the Western Athletic Conference Special Teams Player of the Week today. Cunningham is coming off a game against Cal State Northridge in which he accumulated 279 all-purpose yards.
Cunningham had 279 all-purpose yards last Saturday vs. Cal State Northridge, the second-highest total in SMU history behind only Mike Richardson's 293 vs. Texas A&M in 1968. Cunningham had 106 yards receiving (the most for SMU in 18 games), a 90-yard kick return for a TD (the 11th-longest KO return in SMU history) and 83 yards on six punt returns.
Cunningham currently leads SMU in receptions (30), receiving yards (420), receiving touchdowns (3), punt returns (19) and punt return yards (177). His 30 receptions are the most by an SMU freshman since Mick Rossley had 42 in 1991.
Nicknamed "The Comet," Cunningham becomes the third SMU player to earn player of the week honors this season. Safety Raymon Brown and quarterback Josh McCown were the others.
