Two SMU Men's Soccer Players Named All-American

The SMU men's soccer team added two more postseason awards to its impressive list in 1999. Sophomores Carl Bussey and Mohamed Fahim have been named first team All-America selections by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.

Bussey, a midfielder from Plano, and Fahim, a forward from Irving, led SMU to a 16-4 overall record and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the 16th time in the last 17 years. The No. 17 Mustangs lost to No. 16 UAB 2-0 in the second round.

Fahim earned WAC Player of the Year honors earlier this season after recording a conference-best 18 goals and 40 points. SMU has owned the award, with a Mustang player claiming the honor in each of the four years of WAC competition. Daniel Hernandez was named WAC Player of the Year in 1996 and 1997, and Tony Soto earned the honor last season.

Bussey earned first team All-WAC honors for the second straight year after scoring 12 goals and 31 points, both second in the WAC behind Fahim. His seven assists tied for the conference lead.

SMU was one of three schools to place two players on the NSCAA first team. Indiana and Furman also earned that distinction. Bussey and Fahim were two of just three sophomores to garner first team All-America honors.

Previous SMU men's soccer players earning first team All-America honors include: Saeid Baghvardani (1979, 1980); Mark Francis (1986); Kevin Grimes (1988, 1989); Daniel Hernandez (1997); Kamal Khalilian (1980); Randy Phillips (1979, 1980); Alan Prampin (1992) and Greg Ryan (1978).
