Freshman defensive back Kevin Garrett has been named WAC Defensive Freshman of the Year by the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. Four Mustangs were also named First Team All-WAC.
Garrett, a 5-9, 185-pound redshirt freshman from Brazoria, established himself as one the WAC's emerging top defensive backs while playing all 10 games for the Ponies in 1999. A converted wide receiver, Garrett placed ninth in the WAC and second on the team with 8.1 tackles per game and recorded one interception, two blocked kicks and a forced fumble.
Austin Adami, a 305-pound senior offensive lineman from Corpus Christi, was named First Team All-WAC and was the lone representative of the SMU offense. He moved to center midway through the season and solidified the line en route to SMU's 4-1 finish over its last five games.
The Mustangs' defensive depth was exemplified with a lineman, linebacker and defensive back each being named to the first team. Senior defensive end Luke Johnson led the conference with 12 sacks (11 unassisted) and 19 tackles for a loss, and finishes his career as SMU's all time sack leader with 24. Senior linebacker Jason Simonton again led the team with 125 tackles to rank second in the WAC and had two sacks and 11 tackles for a loss. Senior defensive back Tracy Hart made five interceptions and was second in the conference. He also was credited with 10 pass breakups.
