SMU offensive lineman Austin Adami competed for the Gray team at the 1999 Kelly Tires Blue-Gray Classic in Montgomery, Ala., on Christmas Day. The all-star teams from the north and south tied, 22-22, after the Gray's Jake Arians missed a 22-yard field goal as time expired.
Adami was named second team All-Western Athletic Conference by the league's coaches and first team all-league by The Fort Worth Star-Telegram. The 6-3, 300-pounder started 33 consecutive games on the Mustang offensive line. After he moved back to his familiar center position midway through the season, Adami solidified the Pony offensive line en route to the school's 4-1 finish over its last five games. SMU finished the year with a 4-6 overall record.
Adami, who became the third Mustang offensive lineman to compete in the game in the past four years, was SMU's lone representative in the Blue-Gray Classic. Last season, running back Kelsey Adams, defensive back Donald Mitchell and offensive lineman Jeremy Morgan competed for the Gray in the contest.
Adami is the first of two Mustangs who will appear in post-season all-star games this year. SMU running back Rodnick Phillips will appear in the East-West Shrine Game on January 15.
