Dallas, Texas -- D-dra Rucker scored 14 points and Katie Remke added 10 and 20 rebounds to lead SMU (4-2) to a 63-56 win over Boston University (2-4) in the championship game of the SMU Hoops for the Cure women's basketball tournament on Saturday night at Moody Coliseum.
"We couldn't buy a basket at times but we played solid defense and that was enough to win," said Mustang head coach Rhonda Rompola. "Getting the win was the most important thing."
SMU led by nine at halftime, 25-19, but never extended the lead to more than 10 points in the second half. The Terriers closed to within four points three times in the final three minutes but the Mustangs sealed the win by hitting six of eight from the free throw line in the final 90 seconds.
SMU hit just 28.8 percent from the field (23-of-80) and made only 3-of-16 from three-point range (18.8 percent) but held Boston U. to 34.5 percent shooting (20-of-58) and outrebounded the Terriers by 15, 62-47. The 62 rebounds tied for the fourth most in school history.
Remke's 20 rebounds were the second most by a Mustang in a game. She fell one shy of matching the school record set by Felicia Bluitt against TCU on Feb. 7, 1986.
"Katie (Remke) did a great job tonight," said Rompola. "She controlled the paint with hustle and hard work."
Alisa Wright added nine points and 12 rebounds for SMU. Katie Terhune led the Terriers with 19 points and 10 rebounds.
Rucker was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player after averaging 20.5 points and 7.0 rebounds in the two games. Two of her teammates, Remke and Kennie Patton were named to the All-Tournament Team. Terhume, Molly McDowell of Southern Illinois and Cherbritta Scott of Arkansas-Pine Bluff also earned all-tournament honors.
SMU returns to action on Wednesday night when it hosts Tulane at 7:00 p.m. in Moody Coliseum.
