Roman Oravec Takes National 800m Lead in Arkansas

Roman Oravec ran 1:48.07 to be the first collegiate finisher in the 800m dash in Arkansas Saturday. This time takes the national collegiate lead from 1999 NCAA outdoor champion Derrick Peterson of Missouri. This was the first race of the indoor season for Oravec.

Oravec finished second to TCU allumni Khadevis Robinson who ran 1:47.97 and now runs with the Santa Monica Track Club. Robinson won the 1999 NCAA indoor championship.

In the high jump, Mustapha Raifak jumped 2.16m (7-01) to finish fourth. Second and third place were both also 2.16m, but placed higher on misses. This is the second time this season Raifak has cleared 2.16m. He is currently one of six athletes with clearances of 2.16m for 17th on the national list.

SMU student Clyde Colenso, who completed his track eligibility in the fall, won the 3,000m run in 7:56.25 to defeat a tough pack from Stanford and Arkansas. That time would be second on the national performance list. Colenso is currently training for the 2000 Olympics when he hopes to represent South Africa.
