FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (SMU) -- The Mustangs are back for the second day of competition at the NCAA West First Round for the opportunity to punch their ticket to Eugene. All three runners qualified out of Thursday's first round races to compete in today's quarterfinals.
Nea Sanders placed second in her heat with a time of 13.38 to earn the big Q. She will compete in the quarterfinals at 6:15pm in the first heat.
"The first round wasn't the time I wanted, but I made it finals, so I am grateful for another chance on Saturday," Sanders said.
Macey Hilton pulled out a personal best in the first round of the 800 to place third in her heat and secure a big Q. She ran a time of 2:03.83 and is currently in 11th headed into today's quarterfinals. Hilton will compete today in the first heat at 7:05pm.
"I am super excited to be here and have another opportunity to race on Saturday for SMU," Hilton said. "I can't wait!"
Kirin Chacchia also accomplished a personal best time in the first round. She broke into the 56 second range, running 56.87 in the 400-meter hurdles. She placed second in her heat – also earning a big Q – and is currently placed 10th overall. Chacchia runs today at 7:25pm in heat one.
"One round down," Chacchia said. "I'm ready to leave it all on the track on Saturday, and I'm hoping to punch my ticket to Oregon."
In today's races, the top three in each heat automatically secure their spot at the NCAA Championship. The next three fastest times overall will also qualify for a total of 12 athletes.
In the jumps, Senior Hedda Kvalvag and Freshman Lotta Edzards will compete in flight two of the triple jump. The event begins at 6 pm. The top 12 will advance to Eugene.
