EUGENE, Ore. (SMU) – The SMU women's track and field program will have four athletes competing at the World Athletics U-20 Championships at Hayward Field in Eugene Aug. 5 – Aug. 9.
 
The four Mustangs competing are sophomores Lotta Edzards (Triple Jump - Germany), Carolina Correia (5,000m - Portugal) and incoming freshmen Destiny Look (Heptathlon - USA) and Zara Pomfret (1,500m - New Zealand). Each athlete was selected for the championships for their performance at their respective nation's U-20 championships.
 
The competition will be streamed on World Athletics+, and fans can also follow along with action in Oregon via live results found on the World Athletics webpage. The SMU athletes' event schedule can be found below.
 
Edzards was selected after winning the triple jump title at the German U-20 Championships with a personal best mark of 13.35m. Edzards was one of six Mustangs to qualify for the NCAA West First Rounds last season. The qualification round of the triple jump will be held on Aug. 8, followed by the finals on Aug. 9.
 
Correia will represent Portugal in the 5000m final on Aug. 6. Correia is coming off an impressive showing at Spain's U-20 Championships where she placed second in both the 1,500m (4:35.42) and the 3,000m (9:48.43). The distance runner earned All-Region honors at the South Central Region Cross Country Championships last year.
 
Look earned her selection to the championships by placing second in the heptathlon at the US U-20 Championships with 5,330 points. Look, who already has a lengthy list of accolades, is a three-time Hawai'i Gatorade Player of the Year (2024, 2025, 2026) and 9x state champion who will be competing for SMU next year. The heptathlon will be spread out over the first two days of the competition, Aug. 5-6.
 
Pomfret will run for Team New Zealand in the 1,500m at the championships after achieving the qualifying standard. She finished third in the 1,500m at the New Zealand U-20 Championships and holds a personal best 1,500m time of 4:24.57. Pomfret will compete for SMU next year. Round one of the 1,500m will be on Aug. 6 and the finals will be held on Aug. 9.
