Mustapha Raifak Finishes 7th in High Jump

The 2000 NCAA Outdoor Championships closed out with SMU garnering five All-Americans and three national champions. Saturday, the final day of competition saw three Mustangs compete and one earn All-American status.

Senior Mustapha Raifak closed out his college career with his fourth All-American honor in the high jump. He finished in a three way tie for seventh with a jump of 2.19m (7-2 1/4). This is the second time he has earned All-American honors this year. He finished fifth at the 2000 NCAA Indoor meet.

Also competing for the Mustangs were Diana Nikitina in the women's triple jump and Alistair Cragg in the men's 5000m. Nikitina jumped 12.74m (41-9 3/4) to finish 15th. This was the first time for the sophomore to appear at an NCAA meet. Cragg, a freshman from South Africa ran 14:44.90 to finish 15th.

In the team's race, SMU's women finished 12th with 20 points. LSU won the team title with 59 points, followed by Southern California (56), UCLA (47) and BYU (46). The mustang men finished 13th with 19 points. Stanford won the men's title with 72 points, defeating Arkansas (59), Auburn (51) and Florida (50).

This ends the Mustang streak of placing both men's and women's teams in the top ten at the NCAA indoor and outdoor meet. The steak dated back to the 1997 NCAA Outdoor meet, and was the only team to accomplish that feat over this period of time.
