DALLAS, TEXAS -- The SMU football team scrimmaged for the final time of the preseason on Saturday night at Gerald J. Ford Stadium. The 90-minute workout in shells was a situational scrimmage that focused on special teams and the passing game.
"I thought we looked sharp at times tonight, especially in the kicking game," said Mustang head coach Mike Cavan. "We just wanted to polish some things up and we did that. Now we need to get ready for next Saturday."
Sophomore quarterback Kelan Luker completed 11-of-18 passes for 111 yards while junior David Page went 17-of-26 for 121 yards. Junior Billy Ford was the leading receiver with five catches for 56 yards.
Freshman kicker Chris McMurtray closed the workout by nailing a 57-yard field goal. It was the third straight scrimmage that McMurtray made a kick of at least 50 yards. He also hit a 46-yarder during tonight's workout. Senior Jacob Crowley made a 37-yard field goal and had the distance on a 57-yard attempt but missed wide left.
SMU will get back on the practice field tomorrow at 2:00 p.m. The Mustangs open the 2001 season next Saturday night in Shreveport, La. against Louisiana Tech. Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m.
