DALLAS, TEXAS -- SMU assistant football coach Oscar Giles has resigned from his post and will join the coaching staff at the University of Houston. Giles will coach linebackers under new Cougar coach Art Briles.
"I appreciate everything Oscar has done for the SMU program," said Mustang head coach Phil Bennett. "It is a chance for him to get closer to home. He has family in Victoria and I know that is important to him."
Giles, who played collegiately at the University of Texas, joined the SMU staff under former head coach Mike Cavan in the spring of 2000. He coached defensive ends in 2000 and the defensive line in 2001. Bennett retained Giles when he was hired last year and Giles coached defensive ends last fall.
A search for Giles' replacement will begin immediately.
