Final SMU Football Scrimmage In the Books

DALLAS, TEXAS -- The SMU Mustangs held a 75-minute game-situation scrimmage on Saturday night in Gerald J. Ford Stadium before nearly 700 fans. The first and second teamers were paired against the scout team during the workout.
"These kinds of scrimmages are always tough to gage but they are necessary," said SMU head coach Phil Bennett. "It is as much for the coaches as it is the players. We want to work on our (coaches) communication, signaling plays in from the sidelines, and things like that."
The running game looked good behind tailbacks Keylon Kincade and ShanDerrick Charles. Kincade ran for 70 yards on nine carries while Charles added 63 yards on seven attempts. Kincade scored on a 30-yard run on the offense's first possession.
Tate Wallis, who will open at quarterback in the season-opener against Navy next week, completed 9-of-14 passes for 103 yards and was intercepted once.
"Tate will be the starter," said Bennett. "He makes good decisions back there and we need to protect the football."
SMU will begin game week preparations with a Sunday afternoon practice. Kickoff for next Saturday's game is set for 7:00 p.m.
