DALLAS (SMU) - The SMU men's soccer team handed the visiting FIU Golden Panthers a 4-0 defeat Sunday afternoon at Westcott Field on the campus of SMU. It was only the second time this season SMU has scored more than two goals (beat Marshall, 4-1, on Oct. 7). With the win, SMU (8-4-2) extends its winning streak to six games and remains perfect in Conference USA play (6-0). FIU, falls to 6-4-2 overall, 2-1-2 in Conference USA play.
Duke Hashimoto scored his team-leading sixth goal of the season with an assist credited to freshman Bruno Guarda. The Mustangs scored their second goal at the 37:32 mark when freshman Richard Oliva tagged a shot for his first collegiate goal. SMU took a 2-0 lead into the intermission.
In the second half, SMU held true to its offensive attack while thwarting off FIU's attempt to get on the scoreboard, but the Mustangs increased their lead to 3-0 as junior Jay Needham fired in a 25-yard free kick. SMU's Chase Wileman rounded out the Mustang scoring at the 75:17 mark with his first goal of the season.
SMU outshot the Golden Panthers, 21-9 (11-6 on goal). Mustang goalkeeper Matt Wideman, making his first collegiate start, was stellar in goal, making a number of goal-saving saves.
SMU hits the road for its final three regular-season games, beginning with Tulsa Friday evening at 7:00 p.m. The game will be televised nationally on FOX Soccer Channel.
