DALLAS (SMU) - Team awards for the SMU women's golf team were also handed out recently, with sophomore Lacey Jones winning Kyle O`Brien Lady Mustang MVP honors. Jones also earned the Earl Stewart Jr. Memorial Low Scoring Average Award with a 75.42 average on the year.
Jones earned first-team All-Conference accolades following the season and was C-USA Golfer of the Week for the week of Feb. 24. She hit 94.3 percent of fairways on the year and won the Central District Invitational with a 1-under 215.
"Lacey had a pretty good year," said head coach Todd Selders. "Any time you win a Division I tournament, you are playing some good golf."
Freshman Kate Ackerson was named Most Improved Player after an outstanding spring season. Ackerson was one of SMU's top five as a true freshman and was a third-team All-Conference USA selection.
"Since her first tournament back in October, Kate made major strides in her game," said Selders.
For the second-straight season, Kristina Rothengatter won the Mustang GPA/Scoring Average Award for GPA and stroke average combined with a GPA of 3.48 and a stroke average of 77.23.
Selders said, "Kristina just shows that hard work pays off both in the classroom and on the course."
Sharing the Col. Lynn B. Harding Mustang Spirit Award were juniors Laura Cross and Jennifer Ackerson.
"Laura and Jennifer really kept the team positive and upbeat," said Selders. "But I also had three other players that also really kept this group very competitive."
"It was really a lot for fun this year, but they are out working hard again this summer to get ready for the fall. We should be in pretty good shape to make a run at a very good season starting September 18 in Lubbock."
