WILMINGTON, N.C. (SMU) – Facing gale-force winds, SMU Women's Golf pierced through the adversity, finishing the Landfall Tradition in fifth place, with a 23-over total of 887.
The Mustangs were the third-highest finisher among the six ACC schools in the event. SMU beat four top-25 teams, including No. 2 Auburn, No. 17 Florida State and No. 19 Alabama.
Head coach Lauren Mason could not have asked more from Celine Chen on Sunday. The senior from Australia delivered the 14th-best round of anyone in the field. Three birdies, two bogeys and a double gave Chen a 1-over 73 and a 5-over total for the tournament in a tie for 14th.
Steady all week long, Yoonjeong Huh made sure to stay away from the big number for the most part of the weekend. A final-round 77 put Huh in a tie for 9th, her first top 10 and the best individual finish of her career.
Matching Huh's 77 was Grace Jin. The senior found two birdies on her front nine to help the cause. Jin concluded the tournament at 7-over and in a tie for 23rd.
Maelynn Kim delivered a third 77 for Mason and Mustangs. Like the rest of the field, Kim battled through the strong winds, recording two birdies to just one double bogey. Kim slid into a tie for 41st at 11-over.
Kirra St-Laurent was the only Mustang to avoid a double bogey on Sunday, firing a 78 in the final round to finish 9-over for the tournament in a tie for 30th.
