DALLAS (SMU) - The SMU men's tennis team was edged by No. 12 Texas this afternoon in a long, hard fought match that lasted about four hours. The Mustangs are now 1-1 on the season.
"I am very excited to see the team at this level of play in only the second week of the season," head coach Carl Neufeld said. "Our goal is to always play our best towards the end of the season and make it to nationals and this match is a very big step forward in improving our level of play."
The doubles point fell into the hands of the last doubles match competing. Oivind Alver and Robin Fahgen battled with Bernhard Deussner and Jon Wiegand of Texas at the No. 3 spot but the UT duo won, 8-5. Mustangs Federico Murgier and Alex Skrypko took a solid win over UT's Milan Mihailovic and Miguel Reyes-Varela at No. 1, 8-6, forcing the doubles point to come down to the No. 2 position. Dimitar Kutrovsky and Josh Zavala of Texas overcame David Kuczer and Chris Hooshyar at the No. 2 spot for the 8-5 win and the doubles point.
In singles competition, Murgier was unable to over turn Kutrovsky as he fell, 6-3, 6-2. Mustang freshman, Fahgen came through at the No. 6 position where he dominated Jonah Kane-West, 6-2, 6-3. At the No. 3 spot, Kuczer fell to Reyes-Varela, 6-4, 6-3. The Mustangs came within one point when Alver took the win from No. 100 Rook Schellenberg at the No. 4 spot, 6-1, 7-5. At No. 5, Hooshyar forced a tie-breaker in the first set, but was unable to overturn Zavala of Texas as he fell, 7-6 (5), 6-2. The hotly contested battle at No. 1 singles lasted for nearly three hours. Skrypko took the first set from No. 96 Mihailovic and then with the sets split, the two were forced into a tie-breaker where Skrypko narrowly fell, 6, 6-3, 7-6 (6).
The Mustangs will face Clemson next as the match is slated for a 1:00 p.m. start on Jan. 28 at the Bent Tree Country Club in Dallas.
