DALLAS (SMU) - The SMU women's tennis team will open the 2006-07 season this weekend with a double-header against UTA and UTSA. The first match is slated for a 10 a.m. start on Sat. against UTA and will be followed with 2 p.m. first swing against UTSA. Both matches will be held at the Garland Tennis Center.
This will be the first dual match of the season for all three teams. The Mustangs are under the guidance of first year head coach Lauren Longbotham. No stranger to SMU, Longbotham served as the Ponies' assistant coach for three seasons and is excited for the upcoming season.
The 2006-07 squad is led by five returning players, including two All-Conference USA players in senior Georgiana Marta and sophomore Kristen Reid. Along with Marta, Jennifer Chay helps provide the senior leadership as together the pair posted a .685 winning percentage last season in the middle of the line-up for the Mustangs. Sophomores Natalia Bubien, Monica Neveklovska and Reid became a main-stay in the SMU line-up last season, pairing as dynamic duos in doubles and battling for wins in singles.
