DALLAS (SMU) - Junior forwards Scott Geppert and Richard Oliva scored unassisted first-half goals to lear the No. 6 SMU men's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over visiting UAB Wednesday night at Westcott Field.
The Blazers shocked the Mustangs with an early goal when Derek Rios finished a centering pass from Jonah Stewart in the third minute of the game.
But the Mustangs got the equalizer and the go-ahead goal before the halftime intermission. Senior midfielder Scott Corbin blasted a 25-yard shot at the goal that was turned away by UAB goalkeeper Wes Johnson, but the ball bounced directly to Geppert, who buried the rebound for his third goal of the season.
Oliva then scored the game-winner in the 38th minute, also on a rebound. Johnson turned away shots by SMU junior midfielder Bruno Guarda and senior midfielder Ben Shuleva, only to leave the second rebound in front of Oliva, who drilled his team-leading sixth goal of the season.
The Mustangs, who outshot UAB, 20-6, dominated possession for nearly the entire game. SMU also had seven corner kicks, compared to two for the Blazers.
The Mustangs return to Westcott Field this Sunday when they host Florida International at 1 p.m. For ticket information and a complete schedule, log on to SMUMustangs.com.
