COLLEGE STATION, TEXAS (SMU)--The SMU men's swimming and diving team won all but one event in day two of the Art Adamson Invitational, earning NCAA consideration in two individual events and both relays. The Mustangs now hold the advantage over Texas A&M, 1012-967.
In the 800 free relay, SMU finished one-two, as Nate Clark, Shane Milu, Maverick Smalley and Luka Vrtovec touched the wall in 6:34.72, earning NCAA consideration. SMU's "C" relay team of Greg Doughty, Thomas Fadnes, Alex Hetland and Pontus Renholm finished second in 6:46.82, helping propel the Mustangs over the Aggies. The 200 medley relay team of Renholm, Hetland, Brett Denham and Vrtovec finished first in 1:28.68, almost three seconds faster than A&M's second-place finishers, earning them NCAA consideration as well.
Hetland clocked in at 53.79 in the 100 breast, earning him first place and NCAA consideration, while Renholm notched a new career-best in the 100 back, stopping the clock in 48.37, good for first place and NCAA consideration.
Smalley won the 400 IM, touching the wall in 3:57.03 and Clark took third in that event, stopping the clock at 4:03.07. In the 100 fly, less than one second separated first and third as Denham took third, touching the wall in 49.81. The 200 free saw SMU take first, third and fifth places. Milu won the event, clocking in at 1:40.19, Fadnes came in third in 1:41.19 and Travis Callaghan finished fifth in 1:41.61. Grega Plevelj finished fourth in the 100 breast, touching the wall in 56.44.
On the one-meter board, SMU finished one-two with freshman Matthew Culbertson again taking first, compiling a score of 320.98. Preston Holcombe took second with a score of 295.58. Landon Owen finished fifth with 216.23.
