OMAHA, NEB. (SMU) - The No. 5 SMU men's soccer team battled an old rival and bitter cold, outshooting Creighton, 17-16, but the CU defense withstood the onslaught, turning away each shot in a 3-0 win at Morrison Stadium.
The loss ended the season for the Mustangs (14-5-2), who at one point this season were ranked No. 1 in the nation, according to Soccer America magazine. Creighton moves on to play Illinois-Chicago, which upset Northwestern.
Creighton got the only goal it would need in the sixth minute from Tom Bohnenkamp, and added additional scores in the 37th minute by Andrei Gotsmanov and in the 87th minute by Mo Travis. Meanwhile, CU goalkeeper Matt Allen showed why he has been named Missouri Valley Conference Defensive Player of the Year in each of the last two seasons, becoming just the second player this season to shut out the Mustangs.
The Mustang offense got a team-leading three shots apiece from Adrian Chevannes, Dane Saintus and Bruno Guarda, who earlier Wednesday was named one of 15 semifinalists for the Hermann Trophy, given annually to the top player in the nation.
