PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. (SMU) - The SMU men's tennis team took on San Francisco on the west coast this afternoon at the Pebble Beach Tennis and Swim Club in the Second Annual Pebble Beach Collegiate Tennis Classic. The Mustangs notched the doubles point and then took three singles matches to seal the win, 4-0.
"It was great to have everyone healthy," head coach Carl Neufeld noted. "I feel like this is the first time that we have had all of our players healthy. We played really well in doubles. This was one of the best matches that we have played this season. San Francisco is a good team, they have beaten a lot of the top schools in California this season."
SMU swept the doubles point as all three Mustang pairs took a win. At No. 1, Alex Skrypko and Federico Murgier posted a 8-4 win over Matthew Berry and Asaf Cohen. Robin Fahgen and Oivind Alver demanded a 8-0 win over Falko Huettenberger and Mitch Del Rosario at the No. 2 slot while David Kuczer and Adolfo Solares paired for a 8-6 win over Rainer Nachbauer and Thong Tu at the No. 3 position.
In singles action, Kuczer, Fahgen and Solares all posted wins to clinch the Mustang victory. Kuczer defeated Huetenberger, 6-4, 6-4 at the No. 2 spot and Fahgen outlasted Cohen at No. 5 singles, 7-5, 7-5. Solares notched a win over Einar Hart, 6-3, 6-3. Skrypko took the first set and was leading in the third set over Berry at No. 1 when the match was called. Murgier was also into the third set with Tu and Alver was leading Nachbauer in third set as well.
The Mustangs will face No. 35 Cal tomorrow on the final day of the Classic.
