DALLAS (SMU) - The SMU men's tennis team faced a tough day as they began with strong competition against No. 16 Oklahoma St. and then concluded the day with a win over Centenary.
The Mustangs performed a complete sweep of Centenary, 6-0, taking wins at every spot. In doubles action, Oivind Alver and Robin Fahgen demanded a, 8-1, win over Mark Rodgman and Alejadro Ahuja at No. 1 while Adolfo Solares and David Kuczer shut out Seva Kostelanetz and Jacob Dawson at No. 2 doubles, 8-0. The No. 3 doubles was not decided as Centenary didn't have enough players to complete the line-up.
In singles, No. 67 Alex Skrypko commanded a, 6-1, 6-0, win over Rodgman at No. 1 singles. Federico Mugier posted a, 6-0, 6-1, win over Ahuja at No. 2 while Solares topped Kostelanetz at No. 3, 6-0, 6-2. Chris Hooshyar posted a massive win over Gerry Lozano at No. 4 singles, 6-0, 6-0, and Ryan Hooker defended the No. 5 spot with a, 6-1, 6-1, win over Dawson. No. 6 singles was not decided due to incomplete line-up.
SMU was unable to overturn No. 16 Oklahoma St. this afternoon, dropping the, 4-0, decision. In doubles, Skrypko and Murgier played tough at No. 1 singles against OSU's tandem, Daniel Byrnes and Oleksandr Nedovyesov. The OSU pair, currently ranked No. 83 in doubles, defeated the Mustangs, 8-6. Kuczer and Solares were unable to top Dmytro Petrov and Ivan Puchkarov at No. 3 as they fell, 8-3. No. 2 doubles between SMU's Alver and Fahgen vs. Nathan Byrnes and Artsem Burmistrau did not finish as the Cowboy pair was up by two points before it was called off.
SMU faced a tough challenge with OSU's top two singles being nationally ranked. Skrypko fell to No. 57 Nedovyesov at the No. 1 spot, 6-4, 6-2. After split sets, Kuczer was leading No. 21 Puchkarov at No. 2 singles but they did not finish. Murgier took the first set but he was unable to finish his match at No. 3 against D. Byrnes as it was called off. Alver could not get past Petrov at No. 4 as he fell, 6-4, 6-3. Fahgen was battling back in the second set against N. Byrnes at No. 5 but the two did not finish. Hooshyar was unable to overturn Burmistrau at No. 6 as he fell, 6-3, 6-0.
The Mustangs will continue their home-stand with a match this Tues., Mar. 27 at 2:00 p.m. against UIC at Bent Tree Country Club. They will then close out Mar. with a double-header on Sat., Mar. 31 against UALR and PVAMU.
