Mustangs Power Past UTA, 5-2

April 11, 2007

DALLAS (SMU) - The SMU men's tennis team advanced their winning streak to seven as they took the 5-2 decision from UTA this afternoon. The Mustangs won all three doubles and clinched the match within the conclusion of the first four singles match to increase their record to 14-8 on the season.

"I'm really excited about how we played," said head coach Carl Neufled. "It was a hard fought match against a good UTA team. I am very excited that our doubles is continuing to improve. Oivind (Alver) wasn't feeling well so the other guys had to move up and I'm excited that everyone responded well. Our depth is coming through and came through today against a good team. It's hard to predict with someone gets sick but the team responded well and Federico (Murgier) made a wonderful comeback."

The Mustangs battled in all three doubles matches for wins at every position. Federico Murgier and Alex Skrypko paired for the first win over Gonzalo Bienzobas and Daniel Omana at No. 1, 8-4. Adolfo Solares and David Kuczer powered past Alberto Agis and Dmitry Minkin, 8-3, at No. 3 to seal the doubles point and posted their fifth consecutive doubles win. At No. 2, Oivind Alver and Robin Fahgen outlasted Diego Mattar and Javier Herrera in the tie breaker to win, 5-5 (10-7).

In singles action, Fahgen and Solares quickly put the Mustangs up by three as Fahgen soared past Herrera at No. 4, 6-3, 6-3, and Solares posted a, 6-3, 6-3, win over Minkin at No. 5. Both Fahgen and Solares notched their sixth consecutive singles win. Chris Hooshyar was unable to overturn Bienzobas at No. 6 as he fell, 6-4, 6-3.

Kuczer clinched the match for the Mustangs after narrowly dropping the first set, he battled back to take the final two sets over Omana to win, 6-7, 6-1, 6-2, at No. 2. Skrypko was unable to get past Mattar at No. 1 as he fell, 7-5, 7-5. After falling in the first set, Murgier staged a powerful come back at No. 3 to take the final two sets and tally the win over Agis, 5-7, 6-2, 7-5, and extend his singles winning streak to six.

The Mustangs will return to the courts Fri., April 10, against Conference USA opponent and nationally-ranked No. 27 Rice. The SMU/Rice match-up will begin at 1:30 p.m. in Houston. SMU will then return home to conclude their regular season play against Florida Atlantic on Tues., April 17, at 2:00 p.m. at the Bent Tree Country Club.
