HOUSTON, Texas (C-USA/SMU) - The #48 SMU men's tennis team rallied in singles to win the nightcap of the 2007 Conference USA Men's Tennis Championship in opening day action. The No. 3 seed Mustangs blanked No. 6 seed Southern Miss 4-0 today at the Jake Hess Tennis Stadium on the campus of Rice University in Houston, Texas.
With this win, the Mustangs extend their win-streak to nine as they prepare to play No. 2 seed Rice in Saturday's semifinals with a 3:00 p.m. scheduled start.
The Mustangs battled for the doubles point, but came through with the final win to seal the point. At No. 1, Federico Murgier and Alex Skrypko paired for the 8-3 win over Strate Krstevski and Andrew Poole but David Kuczer and Adolfo Solares were not able to get past Diego Machuca and Domagoj Anic at No. 3 as they fell, 9-8. The doubles point came down to the SMU No.2 tandem of Oivind Alver and Robin Fahgen as they powered past Oscar Machuca and Markus Wessinghage, 8-6.
In singles, Fahgen pushed the Mustangs up, 2-0, when he demanded a, 6-1, 6-1, win over Wren Hood at No. 5 and Alver extended the lead as he cruised to a, 6-1, 6-2, win over Machuca at No. 3. The match was clinched as #79 Skrypko rocked Poole at the top of the Southern Miss line-up and took the, 6-2, 6-4, win.
The Mustangs are now 19-8 on the season as they look to continue their winning streak against Rice tomorrow. SMU closed out its regular season play with a 4-3 upset over #27 Rice on April 13th.
