TEXARKANA, Ark. (C-USA/SMU) - SMU senior Colt Knost won five Conference USA Golfer of the Week honors during the 2006-07 season and capped off his final season with the Mustangs as the 2007 C-USA Golfer of the Year. Knost becomes SMU's second league golfer of the year in three seasons, as Will Dodson was named WAC Golfer of the Year in 2005.
Knost is coming off a big week. After qualifying for the EDS Byron Nelson Championship, he became the first amateur since 1993 to make the cut following a scorching round of 64 during day two of the PGA event. He is joined on All-Conference USA first team by a pair of Tulsa golfers, Mitch Cohlmia and Brett Myers, Houston's Jordan Irwin and Garrett Osborn of UAB.
SMU's Scott Barton also earned conference recognition, as the Dallas native was named to the C-USA All-Freshman Team.
On the links, the SMU squad wrapped up the C-USA Championships, carding a final-round 296 to finish fourth (301-287-296-884). SMU's bid for a fourth-straight league crown was hampered by Knost's absence in round one, forcing SMU to play with only four scoring golfers. Knost joined the team for rounds two and three.
Scott Sikes ' final-round 72 vaulted him into a tie for 16th individually with teammate Draegen Majors (74-73-75) at 222. Frank Wrenn's 225 (71-79-75) was good for 31st, while Barton (79-70-78) tied for 36th at 227. Knost's 71-74 left him at 1-over for 36 holes.
A complete final leaderboard is available here.
Up next for SMU is The Maxwell, May 11-13, in Ardmore, Okla.
