May 17, 2007

Sugar Grove, Ill. (SMU) - Despite a uncharacteristic tough opening round, the SMU men's golf team is only four strokes out of the final qualifying spot at the 2007 NCAA Central Regional at Rich Harvest Farms. Despite only one player breaking 80, SMU carded and opening round 317 and is tied for 16th.

The 27-team, six-individual NCAA Regional is being played over 54 holes, with 18 played each day through Saturday, May 19. The low 10 teams and low two individuals not on those teams will advance to the finals.

Individually, Scott Sikes leads the `Stangs at 2-over 74. Draegen Majors and Scott Barton are tied for 60th at 8-over 80. All-American Colt Knost, who was medalist at a tournament played at this course in the fall, carded his highest round of the year - an 11-over 83. Frank Wrenn wrapped up the SMU team with an 88.

All three rounds are set to start at 7 a.m. and live scoring is available here.
