DALLAS (SMU) - Junior midfielder Bruno Guarda netted a penalty kick in the 110th minute to lift the No. 11 SMU men's soccer team to a 3-2 victory Saturday night over Oral Roberts University at Westcott Field.
With the victory, the Mustangs improve to 4-2-1 this season. The Golden Eagles fall to 2-5-0.
The Mustangs got on the scoreboard first when Guarda dribbled through the ORU defense and slid a long lead pass to sophomore forward Dane Saintus, who beat goalkeeper Andrew Techanchuk inside the left goalpost in the 66th minute.
Less than two minutes later, the Golden Eagles got the equalizer when midfielder Tommy Apitz pounced on a loose ball in the penalty box and blasted a shot through heavy traffic in the 68th minute. But the Ponies reclaimed the lead in the 72nd minute when junior midfielder Gabe Arredondo lifted a corner kick into the penalty box, where Scott Geppert rose over the ORU defense and flicked a header into the top of the net for his first goal of the season.
The Golden Eagles tied the game again on a breakaway goal by Jacob Schmoker in the 77th minute, sending the game into overtime.
The teams battled through more than 19 scoreless minutes of overtime until a lead pass directed toward Guarda bounced up and hit an ORU defender in the hand in the penalty box. The violation resulted in a penalty kick that Guarda converted for the game-winner.
The Ponies will seek their third consecutive victory Friday when they begin Conference USA play with a game at Tulsa.
