DALLAS (SMU) - The No. 8 SMU men's soccer team improved to 2-0-1 with a 1-0 defeat of Georgetown in the final match of the Mi Cocina Classic at Westcott Field on Sunday. Gabe Arredondo scored the Mustangs lone goal in the 35th minute as he hit a 25-yard shot from right of center for his first tally of the season. Arredondo finished the pass from Bruno Guarda after a feed from Leone Cruz. Georgetown drops to 1-3 on the season.
The Mustangs outshot the Hoyas 16-7 and allowed just three shots on goal. SMU goalkeeper Steve Sandbo recorded all three saves for the Ponies in the victory. Arredondo connected for SMU on his only shot of the match. The `Stangs were led on four shots by Dane Saintus as well as three from Scott Corbin, Leone Cruz, and Adrian Chevannes.
SMU won its opener of the Mi Cocina Classic in a 5-1 rout of No. 3 Virginia on Friday.
The Mustangs next match is against 13th-ranked and defending NCAA champion UC-Santa Barbara on Friday, Sept. 14, as part of the New Mexico Tournament. The teams last squared off in the second round of the 2006 NCAA Tournament, when the then top-ranked Mustangs were upset 3-1 by the Gauchos in Dallas. The Mustangs will also face No. 16 Washington on Sunday as part of the four-team event.
