DALLAS (SMU) - The SMU men's soccer team surrendered a pair of first-half goals and endured a shutout by one of the premier goalkeepers in the nation, falling to South Carolina at Westcott Field, 3-0, in the quarterfinals of the 2008 Conference USA Championship.
The Mustangs fell behind in the 25th minute when USC forward Blake Brettschneider fired a shot that deflected off two SMU defenders before eluding Mustang goalkeeper Craig Hill just enough to crawl over the goal line. South Carolina got an insurance goal right before halftime when Bryan Lowder buried a shot after collecting a long lead pass from Mike Lindsay in the 45th minute.
The Mustangs, who were led offensively by forwards Diogo de Almeida and Paulo da Silva with three shots apiece, fell to 10-6-2 on the season, and now must wait to see if quality victories over teams like Old Dominion, Virginia and Oakland - each of which has been ranked this season - are enough for the Ponies to earn an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament.
The NCAA will announce the field for its postseason tournament Monday, Nov. 17.
