DALLAS (SMU)--The SMU men's tennis team got back to its winning ways Sunday, downing UT-Pan Am, 6-1, at the Bent Tree Country Club in Dallas. The Mustangs improve to 10-5 this season, while the Broncs slip to 5-7.
SMU swept the doubles matches, picking up dominating wins at Nos. 1 and 3. In the first slot, Robin Fahgen teamed up with Alex Skrypko to down Ivan Avila and Andrew Irving, 8-2. At No. 3, Oivind Alver and Chris Hooshyar defeated Nirvick Mohinta and Marcus Dornauf, 8-2. The closest of the three doubles matches came at No. 2, where David Kuczer paired with Adham el-Effendi to take down Brett Bernstein and Ashwin Vijayaragavan, 8-6.
In singles, the Mustangs gave strong performances up and down the lineup. At No. 1, Kuczer picked up a convincing win over Avila, beating him in straight sets, 6-0, 6-4. Fahgen played at No. 2, defeating Vijayaragavan in a straight-sets win of his own, 6-1, 6-2. Skrypko kept it rolling for the Mustangs, shutting out his opponent Mohinta at No. 3, 6-0, 6-0. Hooshyar knocked off Irving at No. 4, defeating him in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3. At No. 6, el-Effendi beat Donauf in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3.
The Broncs' sole win of the day came at No. 5, where Bernstein eked out a win over Taylor St. Eve, 7-5, 6-1.
"I think we played pretty good tennis today," said head coach Carl Neufeld. "UT Pan Am is a very scrappy team and we're really improving out there, which is nice to see."
