EL PASO (SMU) - A day after winning the 3,000-meter steeplechase, SMU's Silje Fjortoft earned her second C-USA title, winning the 5,000m in 16:45.52 at the 2008 Conference USA Outdoor Track and Field Championship at Kidd Field. Fjortoft's time was almost 30 seconds better than her nearest competitor.
With those wins, Fjortoft was named C-USA Freshman of the Year and also earned C-USA All-Conference honors.
SMU's 4x400m relay team of Alexandria Smith, Ilyssa Pettigrew, Gayla Cloud and Nnenna Ejesieme also scored for the Mustangs as they took seventh in 3:44.61.
SMU finished the Championships in fifth place overall, scoring 64 points. Rice repeated as outdoor champions with 175 points.
