LUBBOCK, Texas (SMU) - Rachael Forish, Jessa Simmons and Sierra Anderson finished first, second and third to give the SMU women's track and field team a clean sweep in the 5,000-meter run at the Texas Tech Invitational in Lubbock, Texas.
Forish finished first in 18:01.45, Simmons crossed the line in 18:43.14 and Anderson finished in 19:26.47.
Forish and Anderson also led the Mustangs to a pair of top-seven finishes in the mile run; Forish finished fifth in 5:21.16, while Anderson placed seventh, in 5:32.38.
The Mustangs turned in a balanced performance, with strong showings in several events: in addition to the strong showing in the distance events, the SMU throwers and sprinters thrived, as well. Ayla Gill placed second in the women's weight throw (59-9.75), Lauren Kuhner was fourth (52-4.75) and Kylie Spurgeon placed seventh (49-2.5).
SMU's deepest performance came in the 200-meter dash, where the Ponies placed six runners in the top 24. Amber Evans led the Mustangs by finishing ninth (25.19), followed by Gayla Cloud in 13th (26.03), Alexandria Smith in 14th (26.08), Ebony Cuington in 20th (26.90), Donisha Weightman in 23rd (27.01) and Nnenna Ejesieme in 24th place (27.16).
The Mustangs took a split squad to the Invitational, which was an individual competition only - no team scores were kept.
SMU returns to action next Saturday when the Mustangs head to Fayetteville, Ark., to take part in the Razorback Invitational.
