Volleyball: Kahanek, Powell Earn All-CUSA Honors

IRVING, Texas (SMU) - Senior Kendra Kahanek and sophomore outside hitter Dana Powell were named to the C-USA All-Conference Team, the league announced Thursday.
Kahanek earned second team honors after leading the league with an average of 1.24 blocks per set, ranking 38th in the NCAA, and was one of just eight players with more than 100 blocks, totaling 145. The Houston native hit .280, which was 15th best in the league, with 2.52 kills per set, totaling 295 kills this season. The 6-2 middle blocker set a new SMU career blocks record with 501, becoming the first player in SMU history to eclipse the 500 mark. This is Kahanek's first postseason honor since being named to the All-Freshman Team in 2006.
Powell earned second team honors after finishing the regular season fourth in the conference and 73rd in the country in kills, with an average of 3.81 per set. The 6-0 outside hitter's 431 kills ranks second in the league. Powell led the league with 20 double-doubles in 30 matches, finishing the regular season with 356 digs, which ranks 16th in the league with 3.15 per set. The Tulsa, Okla., native earned the C-USA Offensive Player of the Week award on Sept. 14. This is Powell's first postseason award.
The duo will lead the Mustangs into the C-USA Tournament Friday. SMU will open with Tulane in the first round at Rice University in Houston at noon.
