Mustangs Set To Face Tough Road Challenges

Following a 2-0 week, SMU travels this weekend to in-state Texas foes, Rice and Houston. Both of this week's opponents have winning records in Conference USA this season.
THIS WEEK IN SMU VOLLEYBALL:
7 P.M. OCT. 22 - SMU (16-4, 8-1 C-USA) AT RICE (12-9, 7-2 C-USA)
SERIES HISTORY: Rice leads 19-9
LAST MEETING: SMU won 3-2 on Oct. 23, 2009
ABOUT RICE: The Owls, led by Tracey Lam, are 7-2 in Conference USA play this season and only trail the Mustangs by one game for second place in the league. Lam, who was named C-USA Defensive Player of the Week on Monday, has averaged 5.71 digs per set this season. Rice enters the weekend contest winning four out of its last five matches.

SERIES HISTORY: Houston leads 9-6
LAST MEETING: SMU won 3-0 on Oct. 24, 2009
ABOUT HOUSTON: SMU travels to Houston and faces a Cougar squad that has won six of seven matches. Houston has received excellent play from Amber Brooks, who shared Co-Setter of the Week with SMU's Kelli Becerra on Oct. 11.
NOTABLE PERFROMANCES:
POWELL JOINS 1,000/1,000 CLUB: Dana Powell's 18 kills and 27 digs in the Sunday match over Marshall moved her into the 1,000/1,000 career kills and digs club, which only six previous athletes in SMU history have attained. Powell has accumulated 1,011 kills and 1,009 digs during her time on the Hilltop. The junior is joined by teammate Kathryn Wilkerson as the only two active C-USA players to attain the kills and digs feat. Wilkerson joined the club last season and currently has 1,292 kills and 1,414 digs.
WILKERSON ENTERS RECORD BOOKS: Senior Kathryn Wilkerson officially entered the Conference USA record book with 1,414 digs. The outside hitter is now 20th in the league's all-time chart and needs six more digs to move up to 19th place.
