DALLAS (SMU) - SMU senior linebacker Pete Fleps has been named to the ESPN Academic All-District 6 first team, the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) announced today.
Fleps, a semifinalist for the 2010 William V. Campbell Trophy, has been a major factor on SMU's defense, playing in every game for the Ponies over the last three-plus seasons. The management major ranks second on SMU in tackles this season with 79, adding 4.5 tackles for loss, three pass breakups and three passes defended.
To be nominated for Academic All-America honors, a student-athlete must be a starter or important reserve with at least a 3.30 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) at his/her current institution. Nominated athletes also must have participated in at least 50 percent of the team's games at the position listed on the nomination form.
Since the program's inception in 1952, CoSIDA has bestowed Academic All-America honors on more than 14,000 student-athletes in Divisions I, II, III and NAIA covering all NCAA championship sports.
The 2010 ESPN Academic All-America Team will be announced on November 23.
