AKRON, Ohio (SMU) - After a fast start yesterday at the Firestone Invitational tied atop the leaderboard, the SMU men's golf team were overtaken today as they finished in fourth place. The team carded a 291 in the final round after shooting rounds of 291 and 282 yesterday.
"We played better this week, it was great to be in contention," said SMU head coach Josh Gregory. "All you can ask for is a chance to win with nine holes to go. Unfortunately, we didn't play our best, but we will be better prepared the next time we are in contention."
Senior Marc Sambol was steady again today, carding a 71 to finish at 5-under for the tournament, finishing in a tie for seventh. It was a Sambol's second Top 10 finish in of the fall after he finished tied for ninth at the Gopher Invitational last month.
Harry Higgs was one shot behind his teammate, finishing at 4-under. The score earned the sophomore his first Top 10 finish of the season as he tied for ninth place.
After carding a pair of 69's yesterday, Max Buckley shot a 76, finishing just outside of the Top 10 as he tied for 12th place.
"We had three players finish in the Top 12 which is very encouraging," Gregory added. "[Freshman] Sam Fidone also shot a 71 today so those are all positives. We have to keep getting better each event, and then we can be a solid team by the end of the year."
The Mustangs will head to their third tournament in as many weeks next as they will be in Shreveport, La., to compete in the David Toms Intercollegiate at Southern Trace Country Club beginning on Oct. 17.
