IRVING (C-USA/SMU) - SMU's Elena Villamil has been named the Conference USA Golfer of the Week, the league office announced today. Villamil, in the Mustangs' final event before the 2011 C-USA Women's Golf Championship, earned an 11th-place finish at the Baylor Spring Invitational when she posted solid second and third rounds to close the two-day tournament.
The freshman from Madrid, Spain led the SMU women's golf team with a 228 as she tied for 11th place at the Twin Rivers Golf Club in Waco, Texas. After a difficult opening round, the freshman hit 72 and 73 to close the two-day tournament, tallying eight birdies along the way. As a team, the Mustangs tied for 12th place, hitting a collective 946.
She earns the first Golfer of the week honor of her career with the performance and is the first SMU women's golfer to earn the weekly accolades since Tia Gannon did so on Feb. 10, 2010.
