MADRID (SMU) - SMU golfer Maria Elena Villamil won the Madrid Junior Championship last week with a clutch performance after falling four strokes back through 10 holes in the final round. It was the soon-to-be sophomore's second win this month in the Spanish capital after winning the Madrid Junior Match Play Championship on July 7.
Villamil shot a 70 in the opening round, taking a four-shot lead into the second day, but a 74 on day two allowed her competitors to close the gap heading into the final round. The start of day three saw the Madrid native struggle with her putter through the front nine, shooting 2-over. After missing her drive at 10 and three putting the hole, she was four back off of the lead with eight holes to go. On the final eight holes, Villamil showed why she led SMU's golf team last year as a freshman, making birdies at 11, 15, 17 and another at 18 to give her the 1-shot victory.
Villamil has been a member of the National Team of the Royal Spanish Golf Federation and took medalist honors at the 2010 Spanish International Ladies Junior Amateur Championship, the 2010 Madrid Ladies Championship and the 2009 Province of Albacete Spain Championship.
