Mustangs Stumble Against Bears, Fall 3-0

NORMAN, Okla. (SMU) - The Mustangs nearly tied the match 1-1 in the second set, but came up a few points short before falling in straight sets to Missouri State in the second round of the Nike Invitational hosted by the University of Oklahoma. SMU fell to 0-2 on the season, while the Bears improved to 2-0.
SMU battled back in the second set, trying to tie the match 1-1, but the comeback effort came up short. Trailing 21-15, the Mustangs cut the lead to 24-22, but couldn't keep the Bears from scoring the winning point to take a 2-0 lead in the match with a 25-22 second set victory.
In the third set, the Bears opened with a 6-1 run and never gave up the lead. The Mustangs cut the lead to two, 13-11, but made too many errors to keep Missouri State from taking the match in straight sets. SMU had 10 errors with just six kills in the final set.
In the opening set, the Bears took an early lead, 7-5, and stretched it to 13-7. The Mustangs couldn't get within five points the rest way, falling 25-14 in the opening set.
Jessica Oliver led the Mustangs with 11 kills and four blocks, and Sidney Stewart had 15 digs. Freshman Julianne Scheidler had two digs and scored her first point with a service ace. Kelli Becerra finished the match with 28 assists and nine digs.
The Mustangs close out play at the Nike Invitational against Oral Roberts Saturday at 5 p.m. Oral Roberts lost its first match of the tournament Friday night against Missouri State.
