DALLAS (SMU) - The SMU men's tennis team earned its first win of the season today after defeating UT-Pan American 7-0 at Bent Tree Country Club. The Mustangs move to 1-1 on the season.
SMU quickly won the doubles point behind the team's of Gaston Cuadranti and Arturs Kazijevs, and Mischa Nowicki and Robert Sajovich, which both had dominating 8-1 victories. Tobias Flood and Joseph Hattrup sealed the doubles sweep with an 8-7 win.
The Mustangs performed just as well in singles play, with five of six matches being won in straight sets. Like their doubles match, Nowicki and Sajovich made quick work of the singles matches, with Sajovich shutting out Rolf Nederstrasser, 6-0, 5-0, with the No. 5 flight ending in a retirement, and Nowicki defeating Ricardo Hopker, 6-1, 6-2 in the No. 2 flight.
Cuadranti took the No. 1 flight 6-4, 7-5 over Beau Bernstein, while Tobias Flood won the fourth, 6-4, 6-1 over Sebastian Job, and Joseph Hattrup took the sixth, 6-4, 6-3 over Shane Kyral. Pablo Perez-Esnaola finished off the sweep for the Mustangs as he defeated Chetan Panditi, 10-7, in the super tiebreaker.
The Mustangs hit the road next weekend for a pair of dual matches in Naples, Fla., against Florida Gulf Coast on the Jan. 27 at 1 p.m. CT, and Florida A&M on the Jan. 29 at 10 p.m.
