FORT MYERS, Fla. (SMU) - In the first dual match of a two-match road trip in Florida, SMU picked up a 6-1 victory over host Florida Gulf Coast. The Mustangs move to 2-1 on the season with the win.
For the second match in a row, SMU came out strong in doubles play, sweeping the opposition. Gaston Cuadranti and Arturs Kazijevs teamed up at No. 2 to get the first win of the day for the Mustangs, 8-4. The teams of Tobias Flood and Joseph Hattrup, and Mischa Nowicki and Robert Sajovich each followed up with 8-6 wins.
The Mustangs jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead as the Mustangs flew through the first two flights behind Caudranti and Nowicki. Cuadranti cruised past Matthew Rock in the top singles flight 6-1, 6-0 and Nowicki topped Tianyo Bao 6-4, 6-1 at No. 2.
Right behind Nowicki was Hattrup at No. 6, who notched a 6-0, 6-4 victory over Michael Beiler to bring SMU to one match away from sealing the team victory.
Sajovich provided the clinching match as he defeated Lance Lvovsky 6-3, 6-4 in the fifth flight. Pablo Perez-Esnaola closed out the dual match for SMU, picking up the sixth win of the day after defeating Dean Tsamas 10-2 in the third flight's super tiebreaker.
SMU will return to the courts in Fort Myers on Sunday as they take on Florida A&M at 10 a.m. CT.
