RIO GRANDE, Puerto Rico (SMU) - In conditions that made low scores ripe for the taking, the SMU women's golf team began its move up the leaderboard today, shooting a combined 301 in the second round of the Lady Puerto Rico Classic. By carding the fourth lowest round of the season, the Mustangs moved from a tie for 12th place, into sole possession of ninth.
"We played well today shooting a 301," SMU head coach Jeanne Sutherland said. "A lot of players had a chance to shoot low, but we made a couple mistakes that turned into big ones. We just need to continue playing loose, stay focused and get better around the greens. That strategy seemed to work well for us today. Tomorrow we're looking to move into the top half of field, and hopefully we'll get it done."
With Monday's surge, SMU passed four Top-50 teams, including No. 33 TCU. All eight teams currently ahead of the Ponies are ranked in the Top 50.
The Mustangs played steady all day, as four of the squad's five players posted scores in the mid-70's. After shooting in the 80's on day one, Taylor Moreno and Caitlin Pisciotta rebounded nicely. After a team-high 83 yesterday, Moreno shaved nine strokes off of her score to lead SMU with a 2-over (74). The freshman recorded a team-high four birdies on the day. Piscoitta took five strokes off her day one score, carding a 76.
Senior Jennifer Hooper had a solid round, knocking in three birdies and finishing just behind Moreno at 3-over (75).
Four Mustangs currently reside in the field's Top 50, with the highest being Felicia Espericueta, who is tied for 28th place after back-to-back rounds of 76. Hooper is one shot behind her teammate and sits in a tie for 33rd.
The final round of the tournament is set to begin tomorrow with a shotgun start at 5:30 CT. Live scoring can be viewed at Golfstat.com.
