Round One Results
KAHUKU, Hawaii (SMU) -- The SMU men's golf team opened the spring slate of their schedule today with a 282, 6-under, at the John Burns Intercollegiate at Turtle Bay Resort. The Mustangs currently sit in fourth place, tied with No. 20 Duke and behind three Top-25 teams.
Sam Fidone came up big on day one for the Ponies, firing a season-low round of 68. The freshman's 4-under par has him tied for seventh place, three strokes off of the lead. With three birdies on the front nine, Fidone gave a stroke back on the 12th hole after a bogey, but finished strong with a pair of birdies on the final two holes.
Sitting at 3-over though 10 holes, Matt Schovee turned things around with eagles at 11 and 18 to finish the day with a 1-under, 71. Tied with Schovee is Marc Sambol who like his teammate, picked up an important eagle at 18 to get under par for the round.
Rounding out the Mustangs scores, Harry Higgs shot a 72 for even par. The sophomore was 2-under on the front nine, but finished the day with bogeys on 15 and 18.
SMU will start the second round tomorrow at 12:20 p.m. CT, with Fidone in Group 21. Max Buckley will be the last Mustang to start his day at 1 p.m.
