SANTA BARBARA, Calif. (SMU) - The SMU men's tennis team dropped a hard-fought 4-3 dual match today at UCSB. The Mustangs fall to 3-3 on the season with the loss, while the Gauchos move to 5-4.
After dropping the third doubles flight 8-2, SMU rallied at No. 1 and No. 2 as the teams of Pablo Perez-Esnaola and Mischa Nowicki, and Arturs Kazijevs and Tobias Flood picked up 8-6 wins to give the Ponies the doubles point.
In singles play, Perez-Esnaola and Kazijevs both earned straight-set victories in the No. 2 and No. 4 flights. Perez-Esnaola knocked off Benjamin Recknagel 6-2, 7-5, while Kazijevs defeated Axel Bouillin 6-2, 6-3. It was the third singles win of the season for both.
Unfortunately, SMU was unable to find the fourth point that it needed to take the match. Nowicki nearly came up with the winner in the final match, but ultimately fell short, losing in three sets to Greg Scott at No. 3, 7-5, 5-7, 5-3.
The Mustangs will be back on courts March 1 as they travel to Waco, Texas for a 2:30 p.m. CT, dual match with No. 7 Baylor.
