LUBBOCK, Texas (SMU) - The SMU track and field squad had an impressive showing today at the Red Raider Open, winning four events and coming away with 15 top-five finishes. Senior Amber Evans led the Mustangs with three top-five finishes, including a first-place finish in the 200 meters.
Along with recording a time of 24.37 to win the 200 meters, Evans finished fourth in the 400 meters with a time of 55.86 and fifth in the 55 meters with a time of 7.18, which tied her personal best in the event.
In the distances, the Mustangs proved to be too much for their competition, winning the 1000 meters, 3000 meters and mile. In the 1000, junior Kristine Eikrem-Engeset won her second event of the season, running a time 2:54.20, while freshman Kajsa Barr finished third.
The mile saw a pair freshmen finish one-two, with Barr pacing the field at 5:06.80. Frida Kristiansson was just behind, finishing just over three seconds behind her teammate. Senior Monika Korra wasn't too far behind the freshmen duo, placing fifth.
Junior Mary Alenbratt won the 3000 meters with a time of 10:13.70. Kristiansson earned another second-place finish on the day, coming in at 10:26.64.
In the throwing events, senior Ayla Gill recorded her second-best toss this season in the weight throw at 17.73m to finish in second place. Sophomore Helena Perez took third in the "section A" shot put, while freshman Rayann Chin won "section B" with a season-best toss of 12.92m.
The Mustangs head to Ames, Iowa next week to compete in the Iowa State Classic on Feb. 9-11.
