RANCHO SANTA FE, Calif. (SMU) -- The No. 33 SMU golf team added another top five finish to this season's total after taking fifth at The Farms Invitational today. SMU carded a 898 through three rounds, while senior Matt Schovee had the Mustangs top finish of the tournament, tying for 10th place.
"Unfortunately, we didn't play well this week, but we got away with a fifth place finish," said SMU head coach Josh Gregory. "The golf course was very demanding. We didn't manage our games very well and made too many big numbers. This event will serve us well in preparation for NCAA regionals and hopefully, NCAA finals. We must learn to grind it out on tough courses, have more patience and accept par more. To come out of here with a fifth and struggle shows we are improving. This will be great motivation heading into Tucson this weekend."
After a 3-under (69), senior Max Buckley moved up the rankings on the final day, finishing the tournament at 4-over and in 14th place.
Harry Higgs and Marc Sambol each finished the tournament in the top 35, with Higgs finding himself in a tie for 28th after carding a 12-over,228, and Sambol in 33rd with a 15-over, 231. Sam Fidone was just outside the top 40, finishing in a tie for 41st.
The Mustangs will have a quick turnaround as the team heads to Tucson, Ariz., this weekend to compete in the National Invitational Tournament on March 16-17.
