DALLAS (SMU) - The SMU men's tennis team lost a tough 4-3 dual match to No. 45 Drake at Bent Tree Country Club, today. The Mustangs dropped to 7-6 on the season, while the Bulldogs improved to 15-2.
SMU took an early 1-0 advantage by claiming the doubles point with wins by Tobias Flood and Arturs Kazijevs at No. 2 (8-3), and Joseph Hattrup and Robert Sajovich at No. 3 (9-7).
After losses at the No. 2 and No. 5 singles flights, the Mustangs rebounded, also claiming two matches in a row. Kazijevs earned his team-leading eighth victory of the season, defeating Jean Erasmus 10-6 in the super tiebreaker. Sophomore Mischa Nowicki followed by outlasting Robin Goodman, 6-3, 3-6, 7-5.
SMU was unable to sustain the momentum though as Gaston Cuadranti was defeated in three-sets at No. 1 and Sajovich was forced to retire in the third set to give Drake the third and fourth points of the match.
Next up for the Mustangs is a trip to New Orleans, La., to face Tulane at 1 p.m. CT, on Friday.
