WALNUT, Calif. (SMU) - The SMU women's track and field took its annual trip to California this week to compete in the Mt. SAC Relays at Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut and the Bryan Clay Invitational at Azusa Pacific University in Azusa.
Kristine Eikrem-Engeset earned the squad's highest finish of the week, taking top honors at the Bryan Clay in the 5000 meters with a time of 16:41.19. The mark not only won her the event, but it was also a career best for the senior and ranks fifth best in SMU history.
At the Mt. SAC Relays, one of the country's premier track meets for collegiate and Olympic level athletes, Helena Perez took second in the shot put with a career-best throw of 15.80 meters. The mark was nearly a half-meter further than her previous best and ranks seventh all-time at SMU.
Throughout the three days of competition, several Mustang athletes posted season best marks. The Bryan Clay saw Kajsa Barr (2:15.77) and Lakeisha James (2:16.52) record season bests in the 800 meters. Maresha Carrie (1:03.83) did the same in the 400 hurdles, while Caitlin Keen (18:57.02) did so the 5000 meters.
Mary Alenbratt (4:24.95), Eikrem-Engeset (4:30.93) and Barr (4:34.59) all registered season bests in the 1500 meters at the Mt. SAC Relays. Meanwhile, Ayla Gill had a season-best result in the hammer throw with a toss of 55.20m. Craishia Washington (54.84) and Isis Wilson (55.58) also posted their top times of the spring in 400 meters.
Next weekend, SMU will compete in the Bobcat Classic in San Marcos, Texas, the squad's final meet before the Conference USA Outdoor Championships.
